{"id":11261,"date":"2022-06-14T12:08:13","date_gmt":"2022-06-14T10:08:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.isblue.fr\/pacte\/"},"modified":"2025-01-07T16:09:04","modified_gmt":"2025-01-07T15:09:04","slug":"pacte","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/isblue.fr\/en\/pacte\/","title":{"rendered":"PACTE"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Context:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;<strong>PA<\/strong>st to <strong>C<\/strong>urrent land-sea <strong>C<\/strong>ontinuum: socio-ecosystem <strong>T<\/strong>rajectories derived from a regional pilot site&#8221; is an interdisciplinary study of the macro-tidal estuarine environment that aims to reconstruct the trajectory of the socio-ecosystem of the Brest bay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>PACTE is now one of the flagship projects of ISblue. It joins the other Flagship projects and is particularly relevant to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.isblue.fr\/en\/research\/research-themes\/3-sustainable-coastal-systems\/\">theme 3<\/a> &#8220;Sustainability of coastal systems&#8221; and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.isblue.fr\/en\/research\/research-themes\/5-long-term-observing-systems-for-ocean-knowledge\/\">theme 5<\/a> &#8220;Long-term observation systems for ocean knowledge&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Bay of Brest is a coastal ecosystem that has been exposed to strong anthropogenic pressures over the last decades, especially after World War II. interactions and establish robust correlations between driving forces and environmental changes through time.<\/p>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n<p>The study site is approached as a <strong>land-sea continuum<\/strong> and from a<strong> long-term perspective<\/strong>, at least over the last two centuries.<\/p>\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:4px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"wrap_acf_blocks__colored-blocks turquoise\">\n   \n\n<p>The main objective is then to reconstitute the first chronosystemic frieze of evolution of the socio-ecosystem of the Brest bay, and to highlight and model the magnitude of the imbalances with which the Brest bay is confronted when it is exposed to climatic oscillations and land use practices by mankind.<\/p>\n\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Problematic issues:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To fulfill this objective, the PACTE project focuses on three main issues:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Can interannual variability resulting from natural climatic oscillations be recorded with the paleoreconstructions of the Brest bay ?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do regional environmental changes of anthropogenic origin, and their associated effects, represent breaks in the long-term functioning of ecosystems in the Brest bay ?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Can we use historical instrumental data to build and validate a model of the land-sea continuum and confront it with the paleoreconstruction of the Brest bay in the past?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Development:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The PACTE project aims at answering these scientific questions by deploying an integrated study strategy including different aspects:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Sedimentological, geochemical, paleoecological and paleogenetic <strong>feedback<\/strong> from estuarine sedimentary archives.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Analysis of historical records<\/strong> of use and occupation of watersheds (agriculture, industrial activities), maritime activities (fishing, aquaculture) and major climatic events (storms, extreme temperatures, floods), as well as the instrumental monitoring of river and coastal hydrosystems<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Numerical modeling<\/strong> of the physico-biogeochemical trajectory of estuaries within the land-sea continuum (flow, water temperature, concentration, nutrient ratios and fluxes, oxygenation rate, phytoplankton biomass\u2026) from the coupling of fluvial and estuarine\/marine models<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In this way, the project combines several techniques :<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:auto 51%\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"601\" src=\"https:\/\/www.isblue.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Photo-pour-comm-HDR-2-1200x601.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11204 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/isblue.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Photo-pour-comm-HDR-2-1200x601.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/isblue.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Photo-pour-comm-HDR-2-800x401.jpg 800w, https:\/\/isblue.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Photo-pour-comm-HDR-2-768x385.jpg 768w, https:\/\/isblue.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Photo-pour-comm-HDR-2-1900x952.jpg 1900w, https:\/\/isblue.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Photo-pour-comm-HDR-2-300x150.jpg 300w, https:\/\/isblue.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Photo-pour-comm-HDR-2-1536x770.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/isblue.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Photo-pour-comm-HDR-2-2048x1026.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/isblue.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Photo-pour-comm-HDR-2-1920x962.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n\n<ul><li>Fossilized marine bio-indicators and biomolecular tools will be used to analyze past changes in biological communities. In parallel, changes in the harbor landscape will be studied using sedimentological analyses and pollen tracers.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>The sources and dispersion of historical pollution (occasional or chronic) will be studied using heavy metals and lead isotopes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:66% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"928\" height=\"591\" src=\"https:\/\/isblue.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Capture-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11242 size-large\" srcset=\"https:\/\/isblue.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Capture-1.jpg 928w, https:\/\/isblue.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Capture-1-800x509.jpg 800w, https:\/\/isblue.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Capture-1-768x489.jpg 768w, https:\/\/isblue.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Capture-1-300x191.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 928px) 100vw, 928px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n\n<ul><li>All data obtained from the sediment cores will be collated with instrumental data (delivered by <a href=\"https:\/\/www-iuem.univ-brest.fr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">IUEM<\/a> observatory services and watershed managers) as well as historical chronicles (ongoing thesis started in October 2021 between <a href=\"https:\/\/www-iuem.univ-brest.fr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">IUEM<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.univ-brest.fr\/crbc\/menu\/Presentation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CRBC<\/a>).<\/li><\/ul>\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:12px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>In addition, a model of the land-sea continuum will be developed and validated against current environmental data before being applied to the pre-World War II period.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The model-data intercomparison will make it possible to establish and discuss robust causal relationships between the different eco-socio compartments established thanks to the paleoreconstructions, and to simulate, as precisely as possible, past to present trajectories, allowing then to consider future trajectories and scenarios.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:35px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Organization:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The PACTE project is structured around <strong>four working groups<\/strong> or Work Package (WP) :<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Work Package 1: &#8220;<strong>Project coordination<\/strong>&#8221; concerns the general coordination of the project as well as the communication around it.<br>Coord : <a href=\"https:\/\/www-iuem.univ-brest.fr\/lgo\/equipe\/penaud-aurelie\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">A. Lambert<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www-iuem.univ-brest.fr\/lemar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">LEMAR<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnrs.fr\/fr\/page-daccueil\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CNRS<\/a>).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Work Package 3 : <strong><em>&#8220;Shifts in biological communities&#8221;<\/em><\/strong><em> focuses on the evolution of species and biological communities over time in response to changes in their physical and biological environment. Sutton<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www-iuem.univ-brest.fr\/lemar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">LEMAR<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.univ-brest.fr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">UBO<\/a>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Work Package 4 : &#8220;<strong>Modelled-data comparison<\/strong>&#8221; compares modelled data both for the historical aspect using the <a href=\"https:\/\/historade.fr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">HistoRade project<\/a>, but also on the land\/sea continuum aspect.
