Her thesis is part of the <strong>multidisciplinary<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mio.osupytheas.fr\/en\/seas-and-oceans-global-change\/oceanfrontchange\">Ocean Front Changes project<\/a>. The project aims to find out <strong>how fronts affect marine life<\/strong> and <strong>what\u2019s the influence of climate change on fronts<\/strong>, all by keeping ties with the <strong>fishermen<\/strong>, various <strong>stakeholders<\/strong> and <strong>NGOs<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:16px\">So, what is a front? Fronts are located at the <strong>border between two water masses with different properties<\/strong>, such as temperature, salinity or density. For example, sea surface temperature (SST) fronts lie at the frontier between colder and warmer waters. Front zones are <strong>ephemeral ecosystems where biological production is high<\/strong> which <strong>attracts many predators<\/strong> such as seabirds, sharks or marine mammals. Thus, fronts <strong>attract many fishermen<\/strong>, explaining the importance of keeping in contact with them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:33px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:auto 47%\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p style=\"font-size:16px\">The first part of the RESILIENCE oceanographic cruise was taking place in the Mozambique Channel. She considers fronts as those who have a gradient higher than 0.05\u00b0C per km, some of them can go up to 2.3\u00b0C per km! <strong>Thermal fronts are more intense and more frequent<\/strong> along the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.isblue.fr\/en\/oceanographic-cruise-resilience-2022\/la-science-a-bord\/scientific-glossary\/\">continental shelf<\/a>, at the edge of the eddies and geostrophic currents of the Mozambique Channel.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:36px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:16px\">The Mozambique Channel is divided into <strong>four distinct regions<\/strong> (Figure 1) which have <strong>different seasonal variability<\/strong> (Figure 3). Firstly, there is the Comoros Islands and the Northern Mozambique Channel (NMC). <strong>These two northern regions are strongly influenced by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.isblue.fr\/en\/oceanographic-cruise-resilience-2022\/la-science-a-bord\/scientific-glossary\/\">monsoon<\/a><\/strong>, with the North-East Madagascar Current generating (anti-cyclonic) eddies and an upwelling zone near Angoche. The two southern regions correspond to the Southern Mozambique Channel (SMC) and the Agulhas zone. The <strong>multi-sensor mooring<\/strong>, placed in the channel during the scientific cruise in order to remain there for several months, was designed and built at MIO by V. Rossi, J.-L. Fuda and H. Glotin. It will be able to gather data on a <strong>vertical profile from 1056 meters of depth up to the surface <\/strong>with several instruments, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>10 CTDs<\/strong> for <strong>salinity, temperature and density<\/strong> measurements which will, when all gathered together provide a vertical profile of hydrological data;<\/li>\n<li><strong>2 ADCPs<\/strong> used to measure the <strong>water velocity using acoustics<\/strong> (with one aiming upward and the other one downward in order to obtain data on the whole water column);<\/li>\n<li><strong>1 fluorometer<\/strong> to measure <strong>chlorophyll<\/strong> concentration near the surface;<\/li>\n<li><strong>2 hydrophones<\/strong> to <strong>record marine mammal positions<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:16px\">All these tools will thus give a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.isblue.fr\/en\/oceanographic-cruise-resilience-2022\/la-science-a-bord\/scientific-glossary\/\">holistic view <\/a>of the bio-physical interactions in the marine environment<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:44px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>1<\/sup>&nbsp;Sudre, F. et al.
