On May 10<sup>th<\/sup>, he gave us a talk about the <strong>behavior and distribution of tuna in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.isblue.fr\/en\/oceanographic-cruise-resilience-2022\/la-science-a-bord\/scientific-glossary\/\">Marine Protected Area <\/a>of the Palmyra Atoll<\/strong> by analysing <strong>data from Floating Aggregation Devices<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:74px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:auto 46%\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"238\" height=\"146\" src=\"https:\/\/www.isblue.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/fig-1.png\" alt=\"Drifting Floating Aggregation Devices\" class=\"wp-image-9092 size-full\"\/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p style=\"font-size:16px\"><strong>Drifting Floating Aggregation Devices<\/strong> (dFADs) are composed of a raft and a tail made of old net that slow the device down and<strong> attract fishes, especially tuna<\/strong>. This fishing technique is very efficient, tones of tuna gather around the dFADs. Tuna are thought to aggregate around dFADs <strong>to meet and form a school<\/strong>, rather than hunting. These structures mainly target skipjack tuna. In this zone there is an agreement between \u201cThe nature Conservancy\u201d an non-profit organization, and US fishing companies to make the dFADs data accessible for research studies (position and acoustic of the devices entering the zone). The objectives of this partnership is to detect the dFADs before they beach on the Atoll and, what Arthur is working on, to <strong>study the behavior of tuna in the MPA<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:56px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:16px\">The dFDAs carry <strong>echosounders<\/strong> that \u201cscan\u201d the water column from 3 to 115m. The acoustic signals detecting tuna below the FADs are directly converted into <strong>potential biomass of skipjack tuna<\/strong> and sent to scientific database by satellite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:55% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"427\" height=\"345\" src=\"https:\/\/www.isblue.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/fig3.png\" alt=\"Trajectories of dFADs that crossed the Palmyra MPA during the last 9 months.\" class=\"wp-image-9100 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/isblue.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/fig3.png 427w, https:\/\/isblue.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/fig3-300x242.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 427px) 100vw, 427px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p style=\"font-size:16px\">The results showed that <strong>178 dFADs crossed the MPA for the past 9 months<\/strong>, only <strong>3 beaching<\/strong> were recorded. The <strong>day\/night cycle<\/strong> appeared to have a great impact on tuna depth distribution; most of the fish gather at dawn in the deepest layers (80-115m). The presence of <strong>island doesn\u2019t seem to influence the presence of tuna<\/strong>: no relationship has been found between the biomass of tuna and the distance from the island. Apparently neither did the chlorophyll-a or the thermocline depth. On the other hand, statistical analyses demonstrate that<strong> current velocities and the sea surface temperatures<\/strong> estimated by satellite seems to have a <strong>positive impact on tuna biomass<\/strong>. In addition to it the time spend by a FAD in the MPA only have a low impact on the tuna biomass and no spillover from the MPA seems to occur.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:60px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:16px\">In the future, the data from inside the MPA will be compared to data <strong>outside the MPA<\/strong> (for exemple at the scale of the Exclusive Economic Zone) in order to see if the aggregation rates are the same in these two zones. The results will also be compared to<strong> tuna biologging<\/strong> (similarly to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.isblue.fr\/en\/gwenith-penry-tagging-marine-mammals-to-address-conservation-issues\/\">tag data studied by Gwenith Penry on whales<\/a>) to have a more precise view on the fish distribution.
