{"id":31211,"date":"2025-02-13T08:43:34","date_gmt":"2025-02-13T07:43:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/isblue.fr\/?p=31211"},"modified":"2025-10-20T15:39:59","modified_gmt":"2025-10-20T13:39:59","slug":"ocean-twin-pim","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/isblue.fr\/en\/news\/ocean-twin-pim\/","title":{"rendered":"OCEAN TWIN PIM: Critically Exploring the Concept of a Digital Twin of the Ocean for Marine Science and Governance"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>From 6 to 10 January 2025, twelve students took part in the <strong>OCEAN TWIN PIM<\/strong>, led by <a href=\"https:\/\/www-iuem.univ-brest.fr\/equipe\/kernec_maxime\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Maxime Kernec<\/a> (ISblue\/UBO) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www-iuem.univ-brest.fr\/lemar\/equipe\/castrec_justine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Justine Castrec<\/a> (ISblue\/UBO). The week was enriched by contributions from organisations such as <em>Ifremer<\/em>, <em>Mercator Ocean<\/em>, and the <em>SIMI<\/em> of IUEM, offering an in-depth exploration of the concept of the ocean digital twin while raising crucial questions about its scientific, political, and ethical implications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Inspired by the commitment made at the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/oneplanetsummit.fr\/les-evenements-16\/one-ocean-summit-221\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">One Ocean Summit 2022<\/a><\/strong> in Brest, the ocean digital twin represents a major innovation for international ocean governance. This tool aims to model the ocean in all its dimensions \u2014 physical, chemical, biological, and human \u2014 in order to test different sustainable management scenarios. Yet, behind this ambition lie several pressing questions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>What data should be integrated to ensure the model\u2019s reliability?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Who are the actors shaping this technology?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What legal, geopolitical, and ecological challenges does it raise?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Throughout the workshop, students alternated between theory and practice to grasp both the foundations and the implications of the ocean digital twin:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Meetings with researchers and professionals:<\/strong> insightful exchanges on the technical, scientific, and strategic challenges of this emerging technology<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Testing applications:<\/strong> hands-on exploration of existing tools to understand the potential and limitations of digital twins<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Independent work:<\/strong> critical analysis of data, cross-disciplinary discussions, and collaborative synthesis of findings<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Guest speakers included:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.univ-ubs.fr\/fr\/annuaire\/j\/u\/l\/personnel-nathalie-julien-fr.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nathalie Julien, UBS<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/oceanexpert.org\/index.php\/expert\/72456\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jerome Gasperi, Mercator Ocean<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/adeline-souf?originalSubdomain=fr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Adeline Souf, SHOM<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mathias Kurchan, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shom.fr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SHOM<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/mich%C3%A8le-barbier-79200725?originalSubdomain=fr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Michelle Barbier, INRIA<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.umr-lops.fr\/Le-LOPS\/Contacts\/Pages-perso\/Anne-Marie-Treguier\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Anne-Marie Tr\u00e9guier, CNRS<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www-iuem.univ-brest.fr\/equipe\/pauline-chauvet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pauline Chauvet, SIMI de l&#8217;IUEM<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imt-atlantique.fr\/fr\/personne\/ronan-fablet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ronan Fablet, IMT Atlantique<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>By combining the knowledge acquired, participants identified the benefits, limitations, and ethical dimensions of this technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The PIM concluded with a presentation of the students\u2019 findings, offering a comprehensive and nuanced analysis.
