Those field trips took part during the course “Marine Communities and Ecosystems”. To collect specimens of benthic organisms from the harbor, the Albert Lucas is equipped with a dredge capable of raking hundreds of square meters of soil. The dredge allows the ship’s crew and professors to show students an aspect of the diversity that populates the bottom of the Bay of Brest. The dredge is a system that removes the sediment from the bottom of the water column, and as it rises, the fine sands and other fine sediments are sifted out. Only the rocks and benthic and sessile organisms that interest the students and their teachers remain in the dredge.
