OMEGA Polls PIM: Investigating the Environmental and Social Issues Surrounding Omega-3s

In January 2024, as part of a joint interdisciplinary project (PIM), a group of Masters students from UBO, UBS and ENSTA Bretagne investigated the environmental and societal issues surrounding omega-3s.

This project was part of an interdisciplinary research project funded by ISblue: the OMEGA project, which is looking at the effects of the decline in the availability of omega-3s on the world’s populations of small pelagic fish and on human populations.

  • – Did you know that there are terrestrial and marine Omega 3s?
  • – You’ve heard of omega-3s, but do you really know what they’re used for and where they can be found?
  • – Do you know why blue fish such as anchovies and sardines have such a high omega-3 concentration?

The students met scientists from the OMEGA project to discover the origin of omega-3s, their importance for human health and for marine ecosystems, their influence on the price of seafood and the different aspects of an interdisciplinary project (life sciences, marine economics, psycho-sociology).

  • Do you know what consumers think about seafood? That’s what the students set out to find out by delving into consumers’ views through surveys carried out in Brest and the surrounding area.

This video is a rendition using different media (theatre, graphics and comics), of the students’ experience of carrying out surveys and their results:
