Coasts are crucial zones for human activity, ecosystem diversity, and the impacts of climate change. Future generations will face major challenges in managing these areas, whether they are river mouths, tidal flats, beaches, or cliffs, across different tidal and climatic environments, and with varying degrees of urbanisation and coastal management. Addressing these challenges requires hands-on, interdisciplinary experience and training in coastal dynamics.
From 23 to 27 June 2025, the SEA-EU Coastal MGMT PIM/BIP brought together 15 international and interdisciplinary students from the Universities of Faro, Cadiz, Kiel, Split, and Brest to focus on coastal management. The aim was to develop skills to describe and compare the geophysical and socio-economic characteristics of different European coastlines, and to build the ability to predict their potential future evolution.
Divided into three international and interdisciplinary groups, the students spent the week in the field visiting six coastal sites in total, with each group spending two days studying one system. On site, they classified and described the coastlines. Their results took the form of reports detailing the physical and environmental conditions, proposing suitable study and monitoring programmes, and outlining future perspectives for these systems.
By the end of the programme, students had gained knowledge of coastal processes, methodological skills for analysing shoreline conditions and their past and future evolution, as well as practical experience in field techniques.
This project, organised in collaboration with SEA-EU, brought together students from Spain, Germany, Croatia, as well as from Brest and Lorient, for a week of shared learning and exploration.
