The Floating University (UF), funded in 2025 by The French Oceanographic Fleet, the University School of Research ISblue and the French Network of Marine Universities, offer the opportunity for students from french Universities to participate to a scientific mission on the iconic ship of the French Oceanographic Fleet, the ship Marion Dufresne. In this context, students from Floating University can join a multidisciplinary scientific team to take part in activities, and to discover for everyone the organisation of an oceanographic mission, by sharing the proceeding of the operations during all the campaign.
The Floating University is composed by 10 students: Raphaëlle, Léa and Judith, students in Master 2 Ocean Geosciences in Brest; Melvil and Taran, students in Master 2 Marine Physic in Brest; Lucie and Laëtitia, students in M2 Marine Chemistry in Brest, Jules and Jade, students in M2 Sea Sciences in Perpignan, and Marie-Eve, PhD student in Anthropology of Sciences at the IRD of Montpellier. We have been selected to embark on the Marion Dufresne during the campaign MAYOBS-33, dedicated to the sismo-volcanic activity offshore Mayotte island. The pedagogic supervisor, Jacques Déverchère, Professor at Brest University (UBO), insure the coordination of student’s activities onboard, in harmony with the scientific team and the crew.

The oceanographic campaign MAYOBS33 is located in the Mozambique channel, onbord the Marion Dufresne. MAYOBS’ campaigns are carried out in the goal to follow the evolution of the sismic and volcanic activity who affect the island from May 2018. They are realised as part of the REVOSIMA program (Volcanological and Seismological Surveillance’s Network of Mayotte). This campaign MAYOBS33 has to goal to acquire geophysics marine datas to follow this actual activity next to the island and meet to needs of monitoring, particularly those relating to volcanic activity in the eastern underwater range of Mayotte.

The Floating University was funded by the French Oceanographic Fleet, the University School of Reserch ISblue (IUEM), and the French Network of Marine Universities. We thank a lot every partners for their support.
