PhD Mobility: Evangelia Nivolianiti, from the university of Thrace, Greece to IREnav Lab at École Navale

ISblue awarded Evangelia Nivolianiti a funding for international PhD mobility from February to April 2024. She is currently pursuing her PhD in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Democritus University of Thrace, Greece.

Given that her thesis focuses on electrified vessels, which are a key topic for maritime decarbonation, this fund allowed her to advance her research on this topic by visiting the French Naval Academy Research Institute (IRENav) during 3 months.

During her stay, Evangelia has contributed to modeling and experimental works about electric and hybrid propulsion ship which are in full accordance with her PhD subject. A joint journal paper has been writen during her stay that highlights the common works with IRENav colleagues and paves the way for future collaborative research endeavors.

The feedback of Evangelia on this stay  is the following:

“The professors, PhD students, and staff at IRENav are not only exceptional individuals but also highly qualified scientists. The lab is fully equipped, facilitating advanced research in the domain of electrified vessels.

Professor Jean-Frédéric Charpentier and Dr Florent Becker and Dr Youcef Belckier, with whom I had the privilege of working, are outstanding mentors. Their guidance, wealth of knowledge, and support significantly enriched my ISblue experience.

On a personal note, while the weather in Brest differs markedly from that of Greece, with sunny days being a rarity, the warmth and hospitality of its residents more than compensate for it. The city’s views, especially the colors in the sky when the sun rises over the sea, have left an indelible mark on me.

Brest will hold a special place in my heart as my second home.”
