
During our stay on the Marion Dufresne, we were interested in Commander Plouzot’s career. The commander Plouzot works from 20 years in the maritime transport of ores, cereals, submarine cables, and arrived on this ship 6 months ago. However, it is the first research vessel he has commanded. Concerning his work rhythm, he alternates between 2 months at sea (work) and 2 months on the ground (vacations). He explained to us that, over the years, it is like 35 hours a week. During these two months, the captain is required to make important decisions about the navigation, the crew and the operations realised on board. In his opinion, the most difficult is the management of the crisis. It can concern the crew or it can be an external event (fire, flood…). The fire is the most dreaded, and it is why exercises are often organised. Mister Plouzot specified that during these moments, “the bad decision is the one we don’t make”. Finally, he told us that, as a young officer, he followed the news from Marion Dufresne. He feels so proud to command this “endearing ship”.
